PETALING JAYA: The founder of Sugarbook, the biggest “sugar daddy-sugar baby” dating service in Asia, will be charged at the magistrates’ court tomorrow morning.

Selangor Criminal Investigations Department chief Fadzil Ahmat said the 34-year old will be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for publishing any statement with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public.

Under the same section, one could also be charged for inducing one to commit an offence “against the State or against the public tranquility”.

The charge against the founder follows a seven-day remand which started last Thursday.

The suspect, from Minden in Gelugor, Penang, was arrested last Wednesday at a condominium in Kuala Lumpur to assist an investigation into rape and prostitution.

He was also probed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

It is learnt that police initiated investigations into the dating website after more than 70 reports were lodged.

Sugarbook had recently revealed that it had seen a 40% increase in students registering to be “sugar babies” since January, with 12,705 students from 10 institutions of higher learning in the Klang Valley using the platform.
