Zaliha defends free sanitary pad initiative
PETALING JAYA: Health minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa has defended a move to provide free sanitary pads in the health ministry’s toilets, stating that it will give the ministry a better insight into the operational aspects of such programmes.
In a series of posts on Twitter, Zaliha said the move would also help the ministry gain “immediate feedback”.
“I take note of the confusion and am grateful for the public’s views regarding my statement about the provision of free sanitary pads at the health ministry,” she said.
“I would like to clarify that the initiative to be started at the ministry is to look at the operational aspects and get immediate feedback.
“If successful, it can be expanded to strategic health facilities and involve the public.”
At a press conference yesterday, Zaliha announced that the ministry would be providing free sanitary pads in all toilets in the health ministry’s building in a bid to address period poverty.

Apart from the numerous netizens who questioned Zaliha’s announcement yesterday, it was also criticised by Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan who said that sanitary pads should be given to those who were more in need of them.
“I don’t understand who the target group of this assistance programme for the poor is,” he said.
