SEPANG: A job scam victim has urged Malaysians to think long and hard before agreeing to work abroad.
The man, who was rescued by police following a delegation visit to Thailand, said he and four others were miserable throughout their four-month ordeal working for a scam syndicate call centre.
“To everyone out there, don’t be gullible and fall for job offers abroad with purported high pay.
“You never know if the job is legal or not,” said the man, who declined to be named.
Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Abd Jalil Hassan said the five were rescued following a police and Foreign Ministry delegation visit to Thailand recently.
“With the cooperation and coordination involving the police, Foreign Ministry and Malaysian embassy in Thailand, the delegation went to Thailand from Feb 16 to 19.
“I led the delegation with five CID officers from Bukit Aman,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday.
Comm Abd Jalil said they managed to rescue the five, comprising four men and a woman, aged between 20 and 40.

He said they met the five who were being held at a detention centre in Thailand and following discussions with Thai authorities, they were allowed to be sent home.
“Investigations showed the five were scammed by a job recruitment agency to work abroad legally for a salary of US$1,100 (RM4,875).
“They travelled there legally but were forced to work for a call centre,” he said, adding that the syndicate demanded that they hit the daily targets.
Comm Abd Jalil said certain privileges including use of their phones would be barred if they did not meet the KPI.
“We have detected two job recruitment agencies, believed to be involved in cheating locals and sending them abroad to work with scam syndicates.
“This was uncovered following the arrest of several suspects last month.
“Checks showed both agencies were operating with valid licences,” he said, adding that investigations were ongoing.
He said as of Feb 18, police received 267 reports involving 339 victims.
“A total of 218 victims have been rescued while 121 are still stranded in Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand and other countries.
“In Thailand alone, 13 reports have been lodged involving 26 victims with 14 of them still stranded,” he said.
