Penang CM, seeking greenlight to dissolve assembly, says elections for six states likely in August

Penang CM, seeking greenlight to dissolve assembly, says elections for six states likely in AugustKUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — August has been touted as the most likely month for elections for all six states to take place, according to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

The highly anticipated state polls could happen as late as the second week of August, or five to six weeks after the proposed dissolution of the Penang legislative assembly on June 28, Chow told The Star in an interview published today.

The final date is still up to the Election Commission (EC), which has yet to provide a clear indicator though simultaneous polls are expected for all six states.

“There’s a possibility that it would be held in August,” Chow was quoted as saying when asked about the likeliest date for the state elections for Penang, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.

The Padang Kota assemblyman is scheduled to have an audience with Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak on June 27 to seek permission for the dissolution of the state legislative assembly on June 28.

The Selangor state assembly automatically expires on June 25, followed by Kelantan on June 27, Terengganu on June 30, Negeri Sembilan on July 1, Kedah on July 3 and Penang on August 2.

Chow told The Star that the current Penang administration will still have time to hold two state executive council meetings before the dissolution of the state assembly.

“These are normal meetings and I don’t see any big agendas to be tabled for discussion,” he was quoted as saying.

He also said the incumbent Penang state executive councillors will continue to use their government offices in Komtar even after dissolution of the legislature.

He said he had discussed the law with the state legal adviser, and was advised that they could remain in the current office as the caretaker government.

“During this period, the caretaker government won’t be holding any meetings or making any new decisions that will bind the next state government.

“Our role as caretaker government will only be an administrative one, to see that matters that have already been decided before the dissolution are carried out,” Chow was quoted as saying.

But the DAP leader said he personally felt that all state executive councillors should vacate their offices after nomination day.

“Even for those who are contesting, I believe even during the campaigning period they won’t be coming back to the office, although by convention they are still the caretaker state executive councillors,” he was quoted as saying.

He added that there will also be no meetings and no government official matters to deal with by then.

Chow told the newspaper that he would like to defend his Padang Kota state constituency if party leaders are in agreement.

The Batu Kawan MP is a three-term Padang Kota assemblyman since 2008.

A total of 40 seats will be up for grabs in the coming Penang state election.

The Star also reported Universiti Sains Malaysia Centre for Policy Research and International Studies director Associate Professor Azeem Fazwan Ahmad Farouk saying an August election would provide sufficient time for both the ruling parties and the Opposition to prepare.

“I think both coalitions will mobilise their supporters as much as they can. The process has actually started now,” he was quoted as saying.

But he also said the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional “unity” alliance could also use the spirit of patriotism and love for the country to rally support from voters during the Merdeka month.
