Police cordoned off the building where the body was found

KOTA KINABALU: A father’s two-day search for his son ended in sorrow when he found the 21-year-old man’s body sprawled on the ground at an unoccupied building here on Friday (Aug 4).

It is believed the victim, who failed to return home since Wednesday (Aug 2), had fallen off the five-floor building at Jalan Sembulan.

The father, who is in his 50s, had gone out to look for his son, who worked as a waiter at a nearby mall and made the discovery at about 8am.

Kota Kinabalu OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said a police team was deployed to the location after being alerted of the find.

“Based on initial inspection by doctors from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital I (QEH1) emergency unit, the victim was pronounced dead at 9.07am,” he said, in a statement here on Saturday (Aug 5).

He said the medical team also assessed that the victim suffered fractures to his left arm consistent with falling off from a significant height.

“The building has been left idle for almost seven years and the victim is believed to have gone up to the water tank area before falling off.

“There were foot tracks on the building’s staircase and police also found a portable vape device at the scene believed to belong to the victim,” said ACP Mohd Zaidi.

He said police believed no foul play was involved at this moment, adding no weapons were also found.

The body has been sent to the forensics department at QEH1 for an autopsy, he added.

“Investigations have been classified as sudden death,” he said.
