SUNGAI PETANI – Malaysian climber Hazlami Ahmad Nizam, 33, who died while scaling the Mera Peak in Nepal last Thursday (Oct 5), was safely buried at the Kampung Bukit Islamic Cemetery, Sungai Pasir, here at 5 pm today.
Hazlami’s remains, which were flown in from Nepal, arrived at the Penang International Airport at 12.40 pm, before being taken to the Muhibbudin Mosque in Sungai Pasir at 3 pm for the prayer ceremony.
The media previously reported that Hazlami, who was an employee of Petronas Chemicals Kuantan, died on Thursday morning local time at an altitude of 5,700 metres, while on his way to Mera Peak, which is one of the 18 popular mountain peaks in the Himalayan Range, Nepal.
Hazlami’s cousin, Shahidah Nailul Morad, 37, said she had not met Hazlami for a long time, and was shocked over the news of his death.
“He was a very good person, took care of his prayers, was responsible, friendly, and never hesitated to offer help.
“Climbing was his passion, as far as I know, this was not his first climb…he has climbed many times, in the country and abroad,” she said when met by reporters at the grounds of the Muhibbudin Mosque near here.
