Difficult for Ahmad Said to win Kemaman – Analyst

SHAH ALAM – Barisan Nasional’s (BN) chances of winning may be slim, if they placed Terengganu Umno chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Said once again as a candidate in the Kemaman by- election.

Political analyst Dr Mohammad Tawfik Yaakub said if an election were to be held in Kemaman, Perikatan Nasional (PN) would have better chances as the state was swept clean by the coalition, in the past 15th general election (GE15).

“So with that momentum, it would be miraculous and extraordinary if Ahmad Said could win the Kemaman parliamentary seat.

“Only for me it might reduce the majority won by PN and we see that momentum is brought from Pelangai itself because when it comes down to Pelangai, I see the strength or support for Umno there is quite strong.

“If the momentum is brought to Kemaman, it will at least reduce the majority won by PAS and PN,” he told Sinar on Sunday.

The Kuala Terengganu election court previously annulled the victory of Kemaman Member of Parliament Che Alias Hamid who represented PN in GE15.

BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Satuday admitted the party was in an underdog position to take the Kemaman seat from Pas if there was a by-election.

However, he was optimistic that BN could take the seat if they worked hard.

Mohammad Tawfik said BN Strategic Communications director Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek was seen as more suited to be placed as the Kemaman candidate as he had the most potential compared to Ahmad.
“A candidate must be from a higher education background. If you were to compare Ahmad Said with Ahmad Shabery, he was a lecturer, which is leagues ahead of Ahmad Said

“Ahmad Said is rough with his words, but Ahmad Shabery is calm and collected.

“I think he (Ahmad Shabery) had held a ministerial post at a federal level. So these characteristics are enough for him to be placed as a candidate,” he added.
