Report: Muhyiddin says had difficulty sleeping after graft charges, had to borrow money for RM2m bail to stay out of lock-up
KUALA LUMPUR, March 12 — Former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin disclosed that sleep doesn’t come easy to him after he was charged with money laundering and corruption last week.
The Pagoh MP was referring to the six charges to which he claimed trial in the Sessions Court last Friday, with some of those charges carrying jail terms of up to 15 years and up to 20 years if he is convicted.
“When I read [the news] after the charges, it is difficult to sleep at night. My wife, beside me, finds it difficult to sleep. My children are worried. That’s normal,” he was quoted as saying by news portal Malaysiakini at a Perikatan Nasional (PN) ceramah in Batu Caves last night.
The charges were four counts under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act for abuse of power as then prime minister and president of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia for a total of RM232.5 million in alleged bribes from three companies and one individual for his party, with the penalty being a maximum 20-year jail term and a fine of RM10,000 or not less than five times the amount of gratification involved, whichever is higher.
The remaining two counts are for alleged money-laundering of a total of RM195 million of proceeds from illegal funds which were deposited into Bersatu’s bank account, with the penalty being a maximum 15-year jail term and a fine of RM5 million or not less than five times the amount involved, whichever is higher.
Muhyiddin also said that he had borrowed money to pay the RM2 million for his bail.

“Launching a fund or crowdfunding will not be sufficient even until today. So I owe those who have loaned [the money].
“It is fortunate that they have given the money, otherwise I would still be in jail until now,” Muhyiddin, who is out on bail now, was quoted saying.
Bail enables an accused person to not remain locked up while waiting for their trial, and serves as a guarantee that they would appear in court for the trial.
Apart from paying the RM2 million bail through his two sureties, Muhyiddin was also required to surrender his passport to the court.
Muhyiddin is also PN chairman.
Bersatu’s women wing Srikandi was said to have started the “Tabung Abah Hibah” crowdfund for Muhyiddin last Thursday following news reports that he would be arrested and charged in court.
