SHAH ALAM, June 12 — Public servants should be open to change and embrace the Madani concept if they are to move away from entrenched corruption and cronyism, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.

He said Selangor is the national unity government’s fortress and the bedrock for the country’s hopes of becoming a developed nation and must be kept in its control to achieve these goals.

Anwar was speaking to Selangor civil servants today when he urged them not to allow the elite and rich to get away with corrupt practices to enriching themselves and their families.

“People ask why I’m working so hard; well, we have RM1.5 trillion in debt but the rich keep getting richer. That’s why we taxed them, not you, when we took office.

“Lest we forget, the previous administrations wanted to raise electricity rates for everyone; we, on the other hand, raised the tariffs for the T20 rich only.

“I was accused of taking away Malay-Muslim rights while depriving people of their Haj pilgrimage rights. Well, I only did so for the rich as I couldn’t imagine someone earning RM20,000 to RM30,000 a month abusing the system.

“That’s why I hope we can change our mindset, start questioning irregularities in the system and not allow the rich to control you. Selangor is the bedrock of the federal government and all change starts with us,” Anwar said.

“I have inherited an economic system that’s poor but I will bring those who stole the people’s money to justice regardless of their status, religious stature nor rank.”

Anwar appeared to be alluding to Perikatan Nasional (PN) leaders on trial for corruption, such as former PM Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Anwar said public funds that were embezzled could have been used for public infrastructure such as better schools, roads, and hospitals.

He also said that once the government could address these issues, it could also investigate ways to increase civil service pay levels.

“However, mind you, if you work slowly, then you’ll miss the boat, so please join us, work with us to improve the system and let’s move away from the old mentality.

“Work for each other and adopt the Madani concept in your lives and together we will see positive changes in our lives and we can strengthen our economy,” he added.

The gathering was also attended by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shaari, Damansara MP Gobind Singh Deo, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali.
