Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Odilon Kossounou this summer.

Spurs strengthened their defence last month by bringing in Radu Dragusin from Genoa. They are expected to sign another centre-half in the summer, and Kossounou is the latest name to come out of the rumour mill.

Tottenham are a much better side this season than they were last time out.

Ange Postecoglou has truly revolutionised this Spurs side, but their defence is still far from where he would like it to be.

Radu Dragusin is a solid addition, but Tottenham are still being linked with more defenders, and it seems very likely that a new centre-back will be brought in before the start of next season.

Leverkusen star Odilon Kossounou is the latest name to be linked with a move to Spurs, with Sport Bild (21st February 2024, page 23) claiming that Postecoglou’s side and Manchester United are both ‘watching’ him.

The Ivorian, who won the African Cup of Nations recently, is said to be valued at around £43 million (€50m), which may be a bit steep for Tottenham, who only need a backup.

However, Kossounou will enter the final two years of his contract this summer, so there could be room for negotiations to bring that price down.

The defender is represented by Unique Sports Group who also happen to be Brennan Johnson‘s agents. That could further help Spurs in potential transfer talks.

Tottenham need to improve their defence

Tottenham have conceded 38 goals in 25 Premier League games so far this season, which is the worst record among the current top six.

Their total xGA currently stands at 47.92, which means they should’ve actually conceded almost 10 goals more at this point of the season than they have (Understat).

It’s clear that Spurs need to strengthen their defence, and Kossounou would be a very good option. The 23-year-old has improved massively under Xabi Alonso, and he could be on his way to a bigger club very soon.

It will be interesting to see what Tottenham will do about their defence in the coming months.
