Party supporters gather outside nomination centre
HULU SELANGOR: Party supporters have started gathering near the Hulu Selangor Sports Complex and Multipurpose Hall to lend their support and accompany their respective candidates to the nomination centre for the Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat by-election.
Checks by the New Straits Times showed there was heavy police presence as supporters of parties aligned with the unity government and Perikatan Nasional assembled in separate areas near the nomination centre.
Deputy Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was among the top unity government leaders who arrived in the area to provide support for the Pakatan Harapan candidate contesting in the by-election.
It was reported that Pakatan Harapan, through DAP, announced Pang Sock Tao, the press secretary of Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, to assist the party in the May 11 by-election.
On the other side of the political divide, PN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu and PN Selangor chief Datuk Seri Azmin Ali were present to accompany the opposition candidate contesting in the polls.

PN is fielding Hulu Selangor Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) division acting chief Khairul Azhari Saut in their bid to wrest the state seat from DAP.
The Election Commission (EC) said the nomination of candidates at the Hulu Selangor district Sports Complex and Multipurpose Hall will open at 9am today. Candidates will have one hour to submit their nomination papers to the returning officer.
The by-election was triggered by the passing of three-term Kuala Kubu Baharu assemblyman Lee Kiong Hiong of the DAP.
In last year’s Selangor state election, Lee won the seat for Pakatan Harapan in a four-cornered fight against candidates from PN, Muda and Parti Rakyat Malaysia.
In the Selangor state election last year, Lee helped DAP to retain Kuala Kubu Baharu after she polled a majority of 4,119 votes in a four-cornered fight at the state seat.
