PAS leader warns against overconfidence at Kemaman polls
PAS central committee member Nasrudin Hassan says Barisan Nasional will work hard on the campaign trail because it expects to lose.

PETALING JAYA: A PAS leader has voiced optimism about the party’s chances of securing the Kemaman seat at the upcoming by-election while nevertheless cautioning against overconfidence.

Nasrudin Hassan said overconfidence would lead to complacency and could result in defeat, citing the tale of the race between the tortoise and the hare.

“If we are overconfident, we will become lazy, be it in campaigning or working for the party.

“Our rivals will work hard because they expect to lose. So work hard until polling day,” the PAS central committee member said at a ceramah in Telok Kalong, Kijal.

Nasrudin said the party was aiming to win with a bigger majority and believed that its candidate, Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, would be able to deliver a convincing victory.
At the last general election, PAS’s Che Alias Hamid won with a majority of 27,179 votes against Terengganu Umno chairman and former menteri besar Ahmad Said.

The results were nullified after an election court held that the distribution of government aid to voters during the campaign period constituted election bribery.

Speaking at the ceramah, Nasarudin said that Samsuri had not intended to contest the parliamentary seat.

“However, he complied with the party’s directive and accepted its decision. This demonstrates that he is not motivated by greed, contrary to Ahmad Said’s claim,” Nasarudin said.

Ahmad had accused Samsuri of being greedy in wanting two big posts of an assemblyman as well as a parliamentarian.

Samsuri is the assemblyman for Ru Redang.
