Civil servant fined RM30,000 for misusing position at Jasin Health Office

MELAKA: An Assistant Environmental Officer was fined RM30,000 by the Sessions Court here for misusing his position to award a project valued at RM19,633.50 to his sibling, six year ago.

Judge Elesabet Paya Wan meted out the sentence after Ab Hanif Ab Hamid, 43, changed his plea to guilty to three alternative charges out of nine charges during the proceedings on Tuesday (Jan 16).



Based on the statement of facts, the accused, who was attached to the Jasin Health Office, had sought services and supply from the Government of Malaysia for the procurements of toiletries, weed killer, and grass-cutting machinery that were valued at RM10,163.50; RM 5,000 and RM4,500, respectively, before commissioning Thronez Enterprise, a company owned by his sibling, six year ago.

The offences were committed at the Supply and Environment Unit (Bakas), at the Jasin Health Office in Jasin between July 4 to Nov 2, 2018.

The charges were framed under Section 161 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum sentence of three years in jail or a fine or both, upon conviction.

The prosecution was carried out by Deputy Public Prosecutor from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency Irwan Shah Abdul Samat while the accused was represented by counsel Wan Shahrizal Wan Ladin.
