Samsuri as opposition leader? It can be discussed, says Sanusi

PETALING JAYA: Suggestions for Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar to be made the opposition leader in the Dewan Rakyat can be discussed by Perikatan Nasional’s top leadership, says PAS election director Sanusi Nor.

The Kedah menteri besar told FMT that it is too early to give his thoughts on the proposals, but said the PN Supreme Council could discuss it at its next meeting.

“We will explore the best way to bolster PN’s strength and bring stability to the country,” Sanusi said.

Samsuri, a PAS vice-president, was elected the Kemaman MP on Saturday after he defeated Barisan Nasional’s Raja Affandi Raja Noor, a former defence forces chief, by 37,220 votes.

This led to him being described as a potential PAS president and prime ministerial candidate.

Earlier today, unity government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil claimed that PAS is gunning for the opposition leader’s post, which is currently held by Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin.

Fahmi, who is also the PKR information chief, said Bersatu should be worried about PAS’s ambitions, claiming it was “quite clear” the party would push for the post of opposition leader in the future.

Previously, PN chairman and Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin did not dismiss the possibility of Samsuri becoming the coalition’s prime ministerial candidate in the future.

Separately, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said the party had no problem with Hamzah serving as the opposition leader as the Larut MP has been carrying out his duty well.

Wanita PAS chief Nuridah Salleh also dismissed talk of Samsuri taking over the position from Hazmah.

“Hamzah will remain the opposition leader. Currently, there are no issues (regarding the matter). What’s important is that we continue to have meetings and discussions, especially when facing important issues,” she said.
