MACC denies placing officer at Mitra

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) says it has not seconded any of its officers to the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) to monitor the management of its funds, as reported in the media.

MACC said its officers are prohibited from being involved in any board, committee or secretariat meetings involving other agencies.

“MACC has successfully prosecuted 12 cases. Ten cases are still being heard in court while the accused in the other two cases have pleaded guilty,” it said in a statement today.

In 2021, more than 300 companies and NGOs were reported to have been investigated over alleged irregularities in grant allocations totalling RM203 million issued by Mitra since 2019.

In a Bernama report on Friday, Mitra chairman R Ramanan said MACC will second an officer to Mitra’s special task force committee to help monitor the management of its funds.

Ramanan, who also heads the committee, said this is to ensure the funds are fully utilised and distributed in a more transparent manner for the development of the Indian community.

The Sungai Buloh MP also thanked MACC chief Azam Baki for giving Mitra an officer “who will also be present during meetings and will guide us to make sure no mismanagement happens”.

He said this in response to Azam’s statement last Tuesday that MACC investigations into misappropriation of Mitra funds had been completed and those involved had been charged.

Azam had also reportedly made recommendations to strengthen Mitra’s management procedures, according to the report.
