PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional’s (BN) decision to field Amizar Abu Adam as its candidate for the Pelangai by-election on Oct 7 will ensure a win for the coalition, says former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

In a Bernama report, the former Umno vice-president said this was because almost 48.5% of the total 16,456 registered voters in the state constituency were residents of Felda Chemomoi, Felda Sungai Kemahal and Felda Sungai Kemasu.

A total of 7,983 voters reside in the three Felda settlements.

Ismail said as a Felda Chemomoi native, Amizar understood the struggles of settlers and their families.

The Bera MP added that selecting a Felda native as the coalition’s candidate would work in BN’s favour in the Pelangai by-election, just as it did in the Paya Besar parliamentary seat in Pahang in the last general election.

“BN lost in many areas the last time around in Pahang. But in Paya Besar, because Shahar (Shahar Abdullah) is the son of a Felda settler, he obtained a good number of votes,” Ismail said when met while campaigning for BN at Felda Sungai Kemahal here today.

Meanwhile, Ismail said BN’s machinery must use social media platforms as their main “weapon” to woo voters. He noted that while meeting voters face-to-face might be difficult, especially when it involves those residing outside the constituency, social media would enable voters to closely follow election campaigns.

The Pelangai by-election will see a three-cornered contest between Amizar, Perikatan Nasional’s Kasim Samat, and independent candidate Haslihelmy DM Zulhasli.

The Pelangai by-election is being held following the death of Umno assemblyman and Pahang exco member Johari Harun in a plane crash near Bandar Elmina in Shah Alam on Aug 17. Johari was also the Bentong Umno chief.

In GE15, Johari won the seat with a 4,048-vote majority, defeating Kasim, Pakatan Harapan’s Ahmed Wafiuddin Shamsuri, and Pejuang’s Isa Ahmad.
