KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 — The unlikely political alliance between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) in forming the government is not necessarily doomed to end, Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said, contrary to what sceptics including those from his own party believe.

While acknowledging that it was challenging for the former rivals to form an alliance due to their history, he expressed optimism that both parties can work together as long as there is mutual respect and understanding, news portal Free Malaysia Today reported last night.

“If we can sit together and understand each other, I don’t see this relationship ending.

“The same thing happened when we were together with PAS. It was difficult in the early stages, but we managed to get through,” he was quoted as saying, referring to Umno’s previous alliances with the now-Opposition party PAS in the previous two governments.

Dr Akmal told Free Malaysia Today that Umno preferred to align itself with those who are “really sincere”, as opposed to those who preferred to “backstab”.

“Now that the government has been formed, both parties are obliged to ensure it will help the public and avoid as much politicking as possible.

“The people need us and we need to deliver,” he was quoted as saying.

Former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob was yesterday reported to have described the PH-BN alliance as a “forced marriage” that would not last.

Ismail Sabri’s remarks came following a series of criticisms exchanged between leaders of Umno and DAP.

PH lawmakers have dismissed Ismail Sabri’s analogy.

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim told the news portal that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had won a confidence vote tabled in the Dewan Rakyat last December, which meant the incumbent prime minister is proven to have the support of the most number of federal lawmakers.

“Ismail may have forgotten this fact,” Hassan was quoted as saying.

He added that he was confident that the unity government would be able to serve its full term if Anwar could effectively address the issue of the rising cost of living and uphold judicial independence by not involving himself in court cases involving Umno leaders.

“People are resigned to the fact that cooperation between PH and Umno is necessary, but with one caveat – that the Umno leaders in the government must face the rule of law and justice without fear and favour,” Hassan was quoted as saying.

Ipoh Timur MP and former DAP Youth chief Howard Lee also told the news portal that it was common for politicians to criticise each other but emphasised that those part of the unity government must refrain from such actions as it could lead to unwanted racial sentiments.

“Our work in nation-building is more important than ‘love’ or ‘marriage’ between two parties,” he was quoted as saying.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke had told reporters in Putrajaya yesterday that Ismail Sabri’s “forced marriage” analogy is not applicable for a political partnership.

Loke who is also transport minister said the former Umno vice-president’s gloomy comments about the partnership was in defiance of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s wishes for a “unity government” to stabilise Malaysia.
