GEORGETOWN – Penang Police have identified a secret society believed to be supporting an NGO in the state’s upcoming state election campaign.

Penang Police Chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said all secret societies and their activities are currently under police surveillance.

He said the secret societies are suspected to be utilising the NGO during the campaigns and elections.

“We have identified these secret society groups that may influence and disrupt the state election. Additionally, we have also identified individuals with ‘bad character’ in areas where they may potentially influence the election.”

“We are also monitoring the NGOs that are supported by these secret societies, whether for campaigns or causing public unrest.

The two areas are Permatang Pasir, under the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency, and Bayan Lepas, under the Balik Pulau parliamentary constituency.

“The police are focusing on these two areas as well as other regions throughout the duration of the state election.

“The emphasis on hotspot areas is based on information obtained by the police, and so far, the situation is under control,” he said.

Commenting on the strength of officers and personnel from the Penang Contingent who will be on duty during the upcoming state election, he said a total of 5,776 police officers and personnel will be involved throughout the period.

“In addition to the officers and personnel from our contingent here, we are also receiving assistance from 663 officers and personnel from Bukit Aman and other contingents that are not involved in the state election,” he added.

“In Pulau Pinang, there are a total of 23 candidate nomination centers, with 14 located in the island area and the remaining nine in Seberang Perai. The police will ensure a smooth process during the nomination period,” he said.
