Mercedes-Benz Malaysia to maintain prices despite rising costs

SHAH ALAM: Mercedes-Benz Malaysia plans to maintain the price points of its vehicles despite the increase in cost of raw materials globally.

President and chief executive officer Sagree Sardien said the company was also affected by the rise in raw material prices but it was “very well hedged” at the moment.

“Within the current scope, I think we are able to maintain the price points. Of course we will continuously face rising costs when it comes to raw materials and we have to continuously evaluate them, to see where we are still in the right pricing band.

“I do think we are quite comfortable at this state and time to maintain the price point as we see it,” she said in a briefing after the launch of the newly-relocated Mercedes-Benz Autohaus in Setia Alam, Selangor.

On the government’s move to do away with the Sales and Service Tax (SST) exemption for new vehicles, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia vice president sales and marketing Michael Jopp said the company was still waiting for clarity on the details of the announcement.

“We want to know how it would be implemented in terms of the government’s perspective, like what kind of proof is required for the cars that are delivered post-June 30, what qualifies for the reduction of sales tax.

“We have followed up with the Ministry of Finance and Malaysian Automotive Association on these questions and hope to get clarity on this as fast as possible,” he said.
