Anwar’s ‘clean government’ claim gives perception ongoing corruption cases will be dropped, says Syed Saddiq

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s claim that his ministers are not involved in corruption creates a perception that court cases involving Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and others will be dropped, says Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

“The country’s structure is that the Prime Minister appoints the Attorney General and chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), who indirectly monitor and control the bodies, giving the impression that the ongoing cases will be dropped.

“What Anwar claimed in his speech is not a small matter,” said the Muda president in a press conference at the party’s headquarters here on Monday (July 17).

On Sunday (July 16), Anwar during his speech in Permatang Pauh, Penang said that all ministers appointed in his Cabinet have remained clean and free from corruption.

The PKR president, when launching the Penang Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional election machinery, said he had instructed the police and MACC to monitor his Cabinet ministers on any involvement of bribery or related activities in the last eight months since the government was formed.

On April 11, Ahmad Zahid sent a letter of representation to the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) to drop 47 charges of criminal breach of trust, corruption and money laundering involving Yayasan Akalbudi (YAB) against him.

In March, Anwar maintained a neutral stand, saying he had never interfered with the court cases involving Ahmad Zahid.
